What is GPT-4?

GPT-4, short for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer, 4 is the latest version of OpenAI’s language model systems. It’s designed to understand and generate human-like text based on the input it receives. The previous version, GPT 3.5, powered the company’s wildly popular ChatGPT chatbot, launched in November of 2022.

Understanding GPT-4

Similar to its predecessors, GPT-3 and GPT-3.5, GPT-4 is trained on vast amounts of text data from various sources, such as books, articles, and websites. This extensive training allows it to learn patterns, grammar, and context to generate coherent and contextually appropriate responses.

More specifically, through a process called pre-training, GPT-4 learns to predict what comes next in a sentence. This pre-training enables it to grasp grammar, syntax, and even subtle nuances of language. Following pre-training, GPT-4 undergoes fine-tuning, where it is tailored to specific tasks and domains, ensuring optimal performance in conversational scenarios.

What Can GPT-4 Do?

A variety of tasks. It can accept both text and image inputs and perform various instructions based on user prompts. For example, you could upload a worksheet, and the AI could scan it and output responses to the questions within.

Crucially, its intellectual capabilities are more advanced than previous OpenAI models. For example, take the LSAT exam (a standardized test for law school candidates). GPT-4 scored 163, putting it in the 88th percentile, while GPT-3.5 scored 149, putting it in the 40th percentile.
